Hours: 37.5 hours/week

Salary: $40,000 to $55,000/year based on experience

About Us

The New Brunswick Invasive Species Council (NBISC) is a network of various government and non-government stakeholders that works to enhance collaboration and coordination of invasive species management initiatives in the province of New Brunswick. This position is a collaborative initiative between NBISC and the Canadian Council on Invasive Species (CCIS): the national lead and voice on invasive species in Canada. With members and chapters from all corners of Canada, along with governments and businesses, the CCIS brings people together to build practical solutions to prevent the spread of invasive species to protect Canada’s landscapes, species, and communities from invasive species for the generations to come.

Job Description & Responsibilities

As an employee of the Canadian Council on Invasive Species, the Project Coordinator will work with NBISC staff to help increase awareness about invasive alien species (IAS) and build capacity for management initiatives in the province of New Brunswick. The primary role of the Project Coordinator will be to plan, execute, and manage collaborative projects focused on the monitoring and management of various invasive species. The Project Coordinator will also foster relationships with recreational user-groups, conservation organizations, and government stakeholders to identify new project opportunities and help build their capacity to undertake management activities. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a growing organization and develop a wide range of skills. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Developing and managing project deliverables, work plans, and budgets

  • Conducting and coordinating field activities such as eDNA collection, invasive plant surveys, installing insect traps, and plant removal

  • Managing IAS data and coordinating verification of species observations

  • Responding to public inquiries about IAS

  • Providing guidance to partners and stakeholders on management strategies

  • Researching species information and best practices to develop guidance for management

  • Developing training materials and technical documents (e.g. ID guides, management plans)

  • Delivering training workshops and presentations

  • Supervising and training summer students and volunteers

  • Grant writing and reporting

  • Liaising with researchers, government departments, ENGO’s, etc. in both NB and other jurisdictions to stay up-to-date on IAS issues and management approaches.

Qualifications and Skills

The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications and skills:

  • 3-5 years project management experience

  • Demonstrated ability to create effective work plans and execute project activities on-time and on-budget

  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with other organizations/departments/etc. to develop and achieve project goals

  • Self-motivated, with attention to detail and strong organizational & time-management skills

  • Experience executing multiple projects simultaneously

  • Successful experience writing grant applications

  • Demonstrated ability to build lasting relationships with partners & stakeholders

  • Proficiency using GIS software and databases

  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to synthesize information in order to develop recommended solutions to complex situations

  • Experience managing staff and/or volunteers

  • Valid drivers’ license and access to a vehicle (owned or rented)

  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends, and ability to work comfortably and efficiently in the field

  • Bilingual in English and French considered a strong asset

  • Knowledge of/experience working with invasive species considered a strong asset

  • Experience working in the environmental non-profit sector considered a strong asset
