Emerald Ash Borer Workshop - Summary Report

Date: March 26-27, 2024

The Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) workshop, hosted by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and facilitated by the New Brunswick Invasive Species Council, brought together stakeholders from Eastern Canada and the US to address the threat posed by EAB (Agrilus planipennis Fairemaire) to the region’s ash trees (Fraxinus spp.). Designed to foster dialogue and collaboration, the workshop aimed to reflect on past regulatory strategies and outline future directions for EAB management over the next 5-10 years.

Key objectives included understanding stakeholder perspectives and expectations regarding EAB management, alongside exploring diverse approaches such as biocontrol and selective breeding. This “what we heard” report serves to capture insights and recommendations, guiding further exploration of strategies to safeguard Eastern Canada’s ash trees.

Zebra Mussel Meeting - Summary Report

Date: March 13th, 2025

The Zebra Mussel meeting brought together 60+ individuals representing various stakeholders from across Canada and the United States together to increase the knowledge on the emerging Zebra Mussel (ZM) development in the Wolastoq | Saint John River, as well as insight on potential impacts that this invasive species could have. It also provided up to date information on what work is happening in the province, and what has been done to prevent Zebra Mussel spread in other jurisdictions. This meeting was triggered by the recent discovery of a live adult Zebra Mussel, just above the Mactaquac dam, as well as an increase in positive eDNA detections of the species throughout the main stem of the river.
