Supporting Invasive Species Prevention Across New Brunswick
The New Brunswick Invasive Species Council (NBISC) is New Brunswick's invasive species “coordination hub”, bringing together government, municipalities, watershed organizations, industry, researchers, educational institutions, Indigenous communities, businesses, community organizations, and volunteers to strengthen invasive species prevention across the province.
By connecting partners, sharing knowledge, and building capacity, NBISC supports coordinated action to reduce the introduction and spread of invasive species.
The examples below highlight some of the ways NBISC works with partners to build capacity for invasive species prevention across New Brunswick. While our ability to provide support varies depending on staff capacity, funding, and existing project commitments, we welcome opportunities to collaborate and explore new partnerships.
Cost Recovery & Honoraria
Many NBISC services are delivered through grants and partnerships. Customized presentations, workshops, technical support, and other requested services provided outside of existing funded activities are generally offered through an honorarium or on a cost-recovery basis to help offset staff time, travel, and materials.
When activities are supported through grant funding or established partnerships, these services may be provided at no additional cost to participants.
As a non-profit organization operating under Invasives Canada, any honoraria or cost-recovery contributions are reinvested into invasive species prevention, education, outreach, and collaborative initiatives across New Brunswick.
Outreach, Presentations & Educational Events
NBISC works with partners to deliver presentations, workshops, outreach activities, and information booths that build awareness of invasive species and encourage action across New Brunswick.
Activities are tailored to each audience and may include:
Presentations for schools, municipalities, businesses, Indigenous communities, and community organizations
Conference presentations and educational sessions
Information booths at trade shows, festivals, and community events
Interactive species identification activities and demonstrations
Educational displays, preserved specimens, and outreach materials
Current invasive species issues, prevention practices, and reporting

Whether presenting to a classroom, exhibiting at a community event, or speaking at a conference, our goal is to build knowledge, encourage stewardship, and connect people with the resources available to help prevent invasive species across New Brunswick.
Field Identification & Monitoring Workshop
These hands-on workshops are designed for technicians, field staff, municipalities, industry, stewardship organizations, environmental professionals, and other partners who may encounter invasive species during their work.
Where feasible, workshops are delivered in the field and may include:
Field identification of invasive plants
Distinguishing invasive species from native “look-alikes”
Hands-on examination of live plant specimens
Species biology and pathways of spread
Monitoring techniques
Reporting procedures
Species-specific management considerations
Workshops are customized to meet the needs of each organization, project, or sector and help participants build confidence in recognizing, monitoring, and responding to invasive species in the field.
Technical Support & Advisory Services
NBISC helps connect organizations with the knowledge, partners, and resources needed to strengthen invasive species prevention across New Brunswick.
Support may include:

Early detection and reporting guidance
Project planning and development support
Outreach and education planning
Beneficial management practices
Connecting organizations with relevant expertise, partners, and available resources
Support is provided based on organizational priorities, available staff capacity, funding, and opportunities for collaboration.
Educational Resources & Signage
NBISC develops and distributes educational resources that support invasive species prevention across New Brunswick.

Many resources are available to support municipalities, parks, schools, watershed organizations, Indigenous communities, businesses, community groups, and partner events.
Equipment Lending
NBISC maintains a small inventory of equipment to support invasive species prevention, monitoring, outreach, education, and management projects across New Brunswick.
Equipment lending is intended to support collaborative invasive species projects and partner-led initiatives. Rather than lending individual items, we work with project partners to determine the equipment and resources that best support their project objectives. Equipment availability depends on project needs and inventory availability.
